The pen is manufactured by Hitachi Maxell and is compatible with Windows 2003, 95, ME, XP, 2000, NT and 98 platforms. The pen was upgraded from the Hitachi's DP-101U/B digital pen. However, compared to the earlier version Hitachi Maxell DP-201 DFU is less thick and much lighter. The digital makes it possible for users to digitize such analog writing as illustrations, drawings and hand written characters. Hitachi Maxell DP-201 DFU is long lasting. It comes with two hours of writing time in addition to 10 hours for standby on the LI-ion rechargeable battery. The digital pen is an ideal device to carry around when traveling. The digital is compatible with both 1.1 and 2.0 USB as well as Bluetooth 1.2. The pen charger and the USB interface are housed on within the docking cradle for easy charging and transfer. It measures 157 by 21 by 18 mm. for connectivity through the USB, the digital pen comes with an AC adapter. Where users write characters that feature printed dots, the internal sensor in the pen recognizes the dots and transfers then onto the computer. The optic inside the pen has been greatly modulated. Accordingly, the circuitry as well as the electronic parts have been miniaturized. This has helped to reduce the pen's size.
